Established in Greece in 2004, but drawing on experience in the UK, the Netherlands, and Germany dating back to the 1980s, Medi Terra is developing solutions to help small communities and islands become independent of outside services.

Why independence?

Islands and remote communities often depend on the mainland for water, power, and waste management.

This makes the communities vulnerable:

  • What happens if the power supply is cut off by situations that are beyond our control, such as large bushfires, endangering the power stations
  • Vulnerable cables that can also be damaged by bushfires, or worse, even get damaged underwater.
  • What if the mainland water supply dries up?
  • What happens if the undersea pipes get damaged?
  • What if the weather is so rough that ships supplying water cannot go out due to bad weather?
  • Why should we transport our waste elsewhere if we can process it locally and generate energy?

The 4 pillars of our expertise are the following:

  1. Desalination by means of reverse osmosis (RO)
    • Land-based Reverse Osmosis Units: small containerised units typically produce X cubic metres of water per unit per day. These units operate on solar power.
    • Ongoing studies are underway on RO units on board ships.
  2. Pyrolysis of household waste, biowaste and agricultural waste, producing useful energy and minimising transport costs and dumping in eco-unfriendly sites on the mainland, often resulting in fines by the European Union.
  3. Install and operate solar panel fields to generate electricity and reduce dependence on undersea cables.
  4. Installation of solar panels on individual houses to take the stress off the power grid
